Go to Nineveh
This mornings message is now online. The second message in our new series Why Go? finds us examining the background and introduction for the Book of Jonah. As we start to move through the text verse by verse, today's message from Jonah 1:1-3 is titled Go to Nineveh.
Here is the outline for the message. We pray that God will use this challenging and convicting message to motivate us to move beyond reluctance and on to full obedience when it comes ot obeying the command to go and preach the gospel to all who need to hear it!
I. The Prophet - Jonah 1:1
A. The Person
1. Jonah – means “dove”
2. Son of Amittai
3. Prophesied during the Reign of Jeroboam II (793-758 BC)
4. Preceded Amos
5. 782 BC date of prophecy
B. The Place – 2 Kings 14:24-25; Amos 4:1; 5:10-13
1. From Galilee – see John 7:52
2. Prophet to the Northern Tribes of Israel
3. Peace and Prosperity, Idolatry and Transgression
II. The Proclamation – Jonah 1:2
A. The Assignment – Go to Nineveh, Cry Out against Their Wickedness
B. Assyria and Its Capital
1. Capital City of the Nation of Assyria was Nineveh
2. Founded by Nimrod – Gen 10:6-12 (Noah’s great-grandson)
3. Largest City in the Ancient World
4. City Walls were 100 feet high and wide enough for 2 chariots to race side by side around the top
5. Capital of the Most Powerful Nation on the Earth at this Time
6. Assyria conquered Israel in 722 BC as punishment for their sin, took Israel captive, they never returned!
7. Chief Goddess was Ishtar, goddess of fertility
8. City had 15 Gates, Lush Gardens, Parks, Canals, a Huge Library of Clay Tablets
9. On the Tigris River north of modern day Baghdad, across the River from modern day Mosul. (see map) Ur, Babylon, etc
10. Notable Kings of Assyria
a. Sargon
b. Sennacherib – palace had 27 entrances and 80 rooms
c. Ashurbanipal

A. Going the Wrong Way for the Wrong Reasons
(Gen 9:27; 12:3; Lev 19:33-34; 1 Sam 2:10; Isa 2:2; Joel 2:28-32)
1. Reluctance Based on Pride
2. Reluctance based on Prejudice
B. Running from God’s Presence – Ps 139:7-12
