Part Four - Fasting and Treasuring
Matt. 6:16-21
Our text for study this week finds us exploring a topic that is easily and often times neglected in our churches and in our Christian lives these days. The topic deals with worship and service to God, specifically in the area of fasting! When was the last time someone taught a lesson or preached a sermon on fasting? I hope you have been taught this spiritual discipline and benefited from the habit of fasting often. It gives us a great opportunity to deny self and learn self control!
We will also study this week how, when, and where to store up treasures. What do you treasure? How can you know if you are living with Scriptural priorities? Where is your heart focused? We will answer these questions and more this week.
As we learn several more facets of worship this week, I am including a devotional written from Matthew 6:16-21 that deals with fasting, examining where our heart is really focused, and storing true eternal treasures for God’s glory. I have given a format for family worship which includes a verse for the day, study of the Puritan Catechism, time in the Word, devotional thoughts, a sermon from Edward Griffin (a Presbyterian Minister who preached during the Second Great Awakening and lived from 1770 to 1837) titled Enoch Walked With God, a brief article by Puritan Pastor Thomas Boston (1676-1732) titled The Nature of that Faith and Obedience which the Holy Scriptures Teach, recommended Scriptures for further study and meditation, and recommended songs to sing to God’s glory.
(The hymns are taken from our church hymnal, "The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration". Note for Church Members: If you do not have this hymnal at home, you are encouraged to take one home from church for use during the week. These hymns appear in most hymnals available today and the words are also listed in the links provided for musical accompaniment at the Cyber Hymnal.)
