And He Himself gave some to be....evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ...

Building on the Rock

The Place of Obedience in the Believer’s Life
Matthew 7:21-29
Introduction for This Week's Devotions

After all Jesus taught throughout the Sermon on the Mount, He finishes up his discourse with quite a power packed parable! He has already warned against false teachers and the danger they pose to the church. Now He is going to close with an emphasis on false professors! Those who claim to know Christ and claim that they are Christians, but in reality He does not know them! They have no relationship with Him!

What happens to the false professor? What if we are false professors? What is the difference between a true and false professor? These are the questions we will seek to answer this week. We will take a look at what Jesus is saying and apply it to our daily lives so that we can obey the command of Scripture and make our calling and election sure!!

When we boil it down to the most simple understanding of what Jesus is teaching here, we will find out how important it is that we obey Him! We are not seeking salvation by obedience – or works – for that is impossible. It is legalism. But we are told that when we are justified by faith alone we are given the power and ability to obey the Word, whereas if He did not give us grace and faith, freely of His own good pleasure, we would have nothing to do with Him! (1 Cor 2:14).

Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commands.” Obedience proves our love (1 John 2:3-6; 5:3). So let’s learn just how important it is that we obey the Word of God in our daily lives!

As we learn the importance and necessity of obedience in our lives , I am including a devotional written from Matthew 7:21-29 that deals with this issue from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. I have given a format for family worship which includes a verse for the day, study of the Puritan Catechism, time in the Word, devotional thoughts, recommended Scriptures for further study and meditation, and recommended songs to sing and meditate upon in your heart to God’s glory.

(The hymns are taken from our church hymnal, "The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration". Note for Church Members: If you do not have this hymnal at home, you are free to take one home from church for use during the week. These hymns also appear in most hymnals available today.)
